what is myofascial release?

myofascial release [MFR] is a type of manual manipulation or hands on technique, that helps the layers of fascia glide over each other.

imagine an old school dish sponge mixed with a spider web and that’s kind of what a layer of fascia looks like - thick, able to hold lots of liquid but web like more than solid.

now imagine layers of those webby-sponges on top of each other with a honey like substance in between the layers so they can glide smoothly. that’s a healthy fascial system.

sometimes, for a variety of reasons, our fascial layers get compressed or sticky and stop gliding smoothly. this results in tension, pain and limited range of motion. this is where myofascial release [MFR] comes in.

myofascial release [MFR] uses sustained, gentle pressure to un-stick the layers of fascia and help the fluids return to both the fascia [webby-sponges] and in between the fascia layers.

myofascial release [MFR] helps decrease tension, pain and increase range of motion.

2 minute subtle shift...

try it out with a little self-myofascial release [SFR].

  1. place your right finger tips on your right collar bone, the end closest to your throat.
  2. same on other side, place your left finger tips on your left collar bone, the end closest to your throat.
  3. gently press into your collar bones, with a 3 out of 10 intensity.
  4. now gently [3/10 effort] pull your hands down just a bit, like a dragging motion, without really moving your fingertips from your collar bones.
  5. you might feel some pulling sensations. that’s myofascial release.
  6. hold that for a minute or longer because fascia responds to slow, long holds.
  7. you can slowly start to tilt your head up and you might get even more myofascial release.

when you let go you might feel a variety of sensations such as warming, spaciousness, floaty or loose.
