how I wrecked my posture with my breathing


how we're designed to breath

I wrecked my posture and pelvic floor not core.dinating my breathing and it’s taken me years to finally feel confident in my breath and body.

a good chunk of that time was me hesitating to buy in on the impact of breath for pain and posture.

but I’m here to shout it from a mountain top: breathing in 4D is vital to feeling good, moving well because it’s how we’re designed to breathe.

breathing in 4D is also known as diaphragmatic breathing - but that’s a mouthful and doesn’t really explain a lot.

I call it 4D breathing or breathing in 4 directions because, with each breath, we want to have movement in four directions:

  1. front of our body: diaphragm, ribs, belly, chest
  2. back of our body: diaphragm, ribs, shoulders, back
  3. sides of body: diaphragm, ribs, side muscles
  4. bottom of our body: pelvic floor or underwear muscles

different postures and situations will change how we breath.

it’s not realistic to try and breathe this way every single breath but so worth it to start to shift into breathing in 4D more often.

2 minute subtle shift…

pick one routine time during your day to give all your attention to just two full 4D breaths.

maybe try it while:

  • sitting at a stoplight in the car
  • rinsing your dish
  • the first few steps when walking the dog
  • lying in bed before you fall asleep

the smaller the goal the better.

we’re looking for feeling great about nailing our simple goal rather than feeling sucky about not getting a loft goal.
