how to stay fluent in fascial language

the other week we talked about getting big and taking up space so our fascia system would stay expansive.

this week we’re going to the other end of the spectrum, talking compression and getting small to diy a fascia focused movement plan

we can apply the same thinking to getting small as we did to getting big, in ensuring we maintain full range of our movements but there’s something even cooler to explore.

the fascia system has it’s own form of communication, separate from the nervous system and it’s the fastest in the body - happening at rates of 768 mph!!

it’s called mechanotransduction and its the process of the fascia being able to convert pressure or vibration inputs into chemical signals 🤯

the benefit of the fascia having it’s own mode of communication…

  • ensures that we know where every body part is at all times [proprioception]
  • enables us to have postural control and smooth, coordinated movements
  • makes it possible for our bodies to adjust without our conscious awareness
  • allows us to quickly respond to prevent injury and enable recovery

being intentional about getting small and adding beneficial compressive forces into our routines is another way we’re allowing our fascial system to stay fluent in its language of mechanotransduction.

2 minute subtle shift…

here’s a few ways I’ve been working on my fascial fluency by adding compression into my routines, maybe some will fit into your routines??

  • squatting to get into lower cabinets when putting dishes away or meal prepping
  • bending at the knees when getting clothes out of lower drawers
  • extending my exhales to squeeze out as much air as possible
  • doing a chair pose while brushing my teeth
