the power of the breath

we’ve chatted before about the problem isn’t pain, it’s how we think about pain.

when we feel pain - the body is letting us know something needs our attention or needs adjusting.

sometimes we might need to make a fairly big adjustment - like not walking on a twisted ankle for a few days.

but more often than not our response to pain is at its best when we make small and sustainable adjustments, aka: subtle shifts.

I’m here to share that one of the simplest, yet most powerful subtle shifts we can make is in how we breathe.

there’s a few reasons to this:

  1. the diaphragm, the main breathing muscle, plays a key role in regulating the stress response - something that will spike when we feel pain. but just because we are getting air into our body doesn’t automatically mean we are relying on the diaphragm to do it.
  2. if the pain is coming from postural patterns then ensuring we are breathing how we are designed to is clutch for helping us realign to a more neutral home base, thus decreasing postural related pain.
  3. the fascial system talks and responds thru pressure and breathing is a pressure system. so by focusing on how we breath we are directly communicating with and impacting the fascia system…and also the sensations we feel, ie: pain or ease.

2 minute subtle shift…

workshop or not, one of the easiest ways to start to tap into your breathing system and dialing in how you breathe…

BREATHE IN THRU YOUR NOSE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

by breathing in thru your nose instead of your mouth you automatically increase the use of the diaphragm.

using your diaphragm automatically shifts your brain and nervous system into a calmer state called parasympathetic.

the more often you can shift into parasympathetic, the less stressful and intense the pain will seem to your body.

you won’t be changing the pain necessarily but you’ll be on your way to changing how you think about your pain.

you breathe around 25,000 times a day, so here’s to shifting more of those into nostril breaths.
