your brain loves to borrow movement

borrowing movement isn’t ideal for our physical body but our brain loves to do it.

why does the brain love to borrow?

because our brain is mostly focused on two things. 1. ‘what we’re trying to accomplish’ and 2. the most efficient way to do it.

but efficient isn’t the same as effective.

this is where borrowing comes in. the brain will utilize whatever movement requires the least amount of time, energy, effort from us.

it just wants the job done + to move onto the next.

the body however feels a little differently. maybe at first the body will go along with borrowing movement. for example we might not notice how we dump into our low back to pick something up.

but after 7 years and 1.6 bazillion times we might notice how our low back is telling us about the borrowing.

this is where it gets a little confusing…the borrowing of movement now feels ‘normal’ or ‘easier’ to us because the fascia system has been rebuilding itself around this pattern of lifting things yet we hear our low back screaming to change things.

but we’re over here thinking….

“it’s never bothered me before”

“I’ve always lifted things this way”

“I’m more coordinated or stronger to do it this way”

these are all good clues that we can borrow no longer.

2 minute subtle shift…

some more very common sings of borrowing movement include:

  • your shoulders rolling in + forward to push, pull or lift
  • holding your breath to effortful things
  • gripping toes to balance or walk
  • rounding your spine to bend down for something
  • dumping into low back to pick up something
  • pulling shoulders up to ears to lift something
